Average Critic Score: 94.5/100

The 1959 Penfolds Grange Hermitage Bin 46 is one of the three 'Hidden Granges' - wines made by Max Schubert in secret after Penfolds management ordered him to cease production in 1957. Schubert persisted through 1959 without missing a vintage. New oak was not used in these three secret vintages. Bottles were labelled with Bin numbers 46, 49 and 95.

Vineyard sources: Magill Estate (Adelaide), Morphett Vale (Adelaide), Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley). Grape variety: Shiraz 90%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10%. Maturation: Eighteen months in used American oak hogsheads. Alc/Vol: 12.50% | Acidity: 5.20g/L | pH: 3.62

Last tasted 2008. The wine is very firm with dark cherry/bitter chocolate/mocha/herb garden flavours and grained chalky, almost stemmy tannins. Finishes oily dry but it still has great flavour length.

Critic Reviews

96 Points - Neal Martin, Vinous

“The 1959 Penfolds Grange had tough competition being served alongside 1959 Cheval Blanc and Palmer however, it more than held its own. This was one of the “hidden” releases since Max Schubert was forbidden by his paymasters to make unfortified wines, bottled in 1960. Even after so many years the 1959 is sublime, sporting a soft, lush bouquet of red fruit tinged with VA, hints of prune and nougat, warm bricks on a summer’s day. The palate conveys a sense of volume and concentration, clove and garrigues-tinged red fruit, rounded in texture and maybe just losing a little delineation towards the caressing, quite voluminous finish. But what a fabulous Grange, a privilege to drink after all these years.”

93 Points - Andrew Caillard, The Vintage Journal

“At the end of its optimum life. Some bottles holding up with advanced maturity but fine sinewy tannins. Very Rare. 90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.”
