Average Critic Score: 98.0/100

The Relic is sourced from the Hongell Family Vineyard in Krondorf, incorporating 2% co-fermented Viognier alongside 98% Shiraz. The Viognier is destemmed and added on top of the Shiraz ferment, lending aromatic lift, floral complexity and textural refinement without dominating the wine's inherently powerful character.

The 2024 growing season delivered low yields from a dry and challenging year marked by early frosts and compressed ripening across the Barossa. All Standish cuvees spent 542 days in barrel through malolactic fermentation and slow oak evolution. Dan Standish describes the vintage as "short, sharp, and exceptional," with every vineyard picked at optimum readiness.

Rated 98 points by Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate), who praises its silky tannins, ferrous depth and monumentally long, chalky finish. Stuart McCloskey (The Vinorium) describes it as "a thrilling, expressive wine" of towering scale, with a finish that is "ridiculously long, savoury and gently spiced."

Critic Reviews

98 Points - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

“The 2024 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier comprises 2% Viognier, destemmed and co-fermented with the Shiraz. Aromatically, the wine leads with red apples and cherry blossom, cranberry, pomegranate and apricot flowers. This is floral, with rose petals and violets, set against the backdrop of black fruit. Freshness abounds. In the mouth, the wine is silky, the tannins ferrous and profuse and the length typically long. Very fine in its shape and monumentally powerful but chalky too.”

Stuart McCloskey, The Vinorium

“Cracked black pepper is the first thing to hit your senses. Immediate, explosive, and utterly captivating. A chasm of iron ore, sea kelp, sea salt and iodine come rushing through, alongside the blackest liquorice and a twist of bergamot. The palate delivers the perfect interplay between power and finesse. Tannins are firm, providing structure without hardness, while a pepper-laced energy courses through the wine. The finish is ridiculously long, savoury and gently spiced. A thrilling, expressive wine and something very special.”
